Child Care Dilemma

As a busy mom who juggles full time work, a family, and school, finding child care is one of those issues to face.  Yesterday afternoon my son's child care called to inform me that they were closing the doors for good on August 23rd.  Not because of violations or any issues of that sort, but because of low enrollment.  Apparently, a new initiative that the City of San Antonio is starting on August 25th is the result of low enrollment.

Therefore, my husband and I have been searching for a chid care center who will take our son.  Who knew about all the struggles to face just to find day care for our son? At this late in the game, child care centers are filling up and now a waiting list is forming.

At the same time, we didn't know how good we had it until we started shopping.  Currently, we pay $120 a week for our son to stay at his current center.  After calling around today, many are charging between $140 -$160 a week.  Don't forget the registration fee of $350!

As we're goung through the process of finding child care, some questions are also formulating:  Should one of us stay home to care for our child?  Or should we move to Las Vegas where we can get family support to care for our child? Remember the saying, it take a village to raise one child? I truly believe it now as we are going through the process!

As we're going through this process of deciding what to do, have any of you gone through something like this? I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts!

  1. I am going through the same struggle here but I have two in diapers. The cost for two in diapers at the day care near me is almost $3,000 per month! I am in NJ.

  2. Oh boy, I think that we have all been in that situation at one point or another. I am thankful that when mine were little, mom and grandma, pitched in often. Also, working opposite shifts during some of the times, happened on some occasions. Then thankfully, the oldest did quite a bit of baby sitting, too. Have faith, things will work out. :)

  3. I recently encountered the same problem; our fabulous care giver gave notice as she has decided to return to school. Thing is, I just graduated myself and now I'm looking for care. I have three others who are school aged so I had figured I would take the summer off anyway but now it might be an issue to find something afterwards as well. I'm considering other options myself that might allow me to stay home right now. Sometimes you can find opportunities in the greatest difficulties :)

  4. I am also in similar shoes. New baby and a 3 year old at home. My mum leaves next week! Even though I am on mat leave I have some projects I am working on so definitely need child care.

    I hope u find something suitable x
